In “A Safe Passage” Detti demonstrates that even for the aristocracy, travel in the 17th century could be a difficult ordeal. In this scene, a severe storm has recently passed over and left a noble party and their carriage stranded on the road.  A member of the escort has returned with saddle horses that the members of the party must now mount if they are to continue their journey. The focus of the composition is the young princess being assisted by a squire across the muddy track to the waiting horse that is richly saddled and draped in colors that match her costume. In the background, two chaperones in wimples, dismayed by the delay, converse with an officer of the guard.

Detti was a prolific painter of portraits, genre scenes in costume and historical subjects (Henry III received by the Doge Mocenigo Foscari Palace, Cesare Borgia, Galileo at court; see. Thieme-Becker), Detti combined a relaxed, although cautious , modernity from the museum into a skillful eclecticism that involved, in the style then in vogue, the Dutch of the seventeenth and eighteenth century French and English Schools.


Caesar Augustus Detti was born in Spoleto from David Annunziata Vannini November 28 1847. In 1862 he moved to Rome and enrolled at the Accademia di San Luca, where he studied under Francesco Podesti and graduated in 1865.


In 1872 he exhibited in Naples and the following year in Rome (Pavoni, March 23, 1941): in 1872 his paintings attracted the attention of the French merchant A. Goupil, who invited him to Paris (Thieme-Becker), where D . went in '76 and where he settled in 1880. starting from 1876 he participated in numerous Parisian official exhibitions.


In 1878 he exhibited at the Salon: The Brawl.; in 1879 in the section foreign schools of the Universal Exhibition A Festival. watercolourists member of the Association of Roma from 1881 (Lomonaco, 1987), the same year he participated in the Salon de la Société des artistes français. In 1888 he took part in London Italian Exposition; and the following year was appointed vice president of the Italian Committee of the Universal Exposition in Paris and one of his paintings was awarded the bronze medal; since 1891 he exhibited at the Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-arts. In 1900 introduced the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the Aurora, a ceiling canvas, for the home of a collector in New York (Thieme-Becker), awarded the silver medal; in 1902 (?) all'Esposiz. ital. Petersburg exhibited Costume Louis XVI (Edouard-Joseph), in 1910 at the Salon La défense du drapeau, which was a great success of public .

He died in Paris May 19, 1914.
